A Kickstart for Apprenticeships

Central West Community College is keen to help local employers access the Australian Government's new Apprentice Kickstart program.

The Apprentice Kickstart program, announced by Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard on 16 October will invest $100 million to support up to 21,000 young Australians entering traditional trades this summer.

The program will more than triple the first year bonus paid to employers who take on traditional trades apprentices between 1 December 2009 and 28 February 2010 or until 21,000 apprentices have commenced in traditional trades hit hardest by the skills shortages. Apprentices must be aged 19 years of age or under to be eligible.

Under the Apprentice Kickstart program, the commencement bonus paid to an eligible employer is increased from $1,500 to $2,350 and then followed up with another $2,500 at nine months. The employer receives a total of $4,850 during the first year for commencing a traditional trade apprentice during the coming summer period.

Employers are encouraged to contact Central West Community College immediately to discuss their eligibility to access the Apprentice Kickstart program or to find out more about any of the incentives available to them to support an apprentice.

Changes are also coming for the Support for Mid-Career Apprentices payment. The changes will commence from 1 January 2010. Click here to find out what's changing or phone Central West Community College on 1300 302 977.
